The three manual organ was completed in 1977 by Beckerath Organ Builders, a German firm which was under the management of Rudolph von Beckerath – it was later unfortunate that Beckerath could not witness the final installation of the organ due to his passing in 1976. In a journal article from The Diapason in February 1977, Paul Jenkins writes, ‘Once, when asked if he built a ‘Baroque’ organ, Mr Beckerath responded that he built a ‘modern organ’. This proves that the organ is a magnificent example of its kind, showcasing great results established by the earlier 20th-century reforms in organ building.

The organ is used mainly by the South African College of Music for teaching, masterclasses, recitals and symphonic concerts. Furthermore, the South African College of Music was the first institution to invest in a mechanical action organ which was by then already common practice in Europe and America.
